Holmes, Oliver Wendell
(29 ago. 1809, Cambridge, Mass., EE.UU.–7 oct. 1894, Cambridge).

Médico, poeta y humorista estadounidense. Ingresó como docente a la Universidad de Harvard en 1847 y llegó a ser decano de la facultad de medicina. Se hizo famoso en todo el país por su poema Old Ironsides [Viejo acorazado] (1830). A partir de 1857 publicó mensualmente sus ensayos "al desayuno en la revista The Atlantic Monthly, recopilados posteriormente en The Autocrat of the Breakfast-Table [El autócrata al desayuno] (1858) y The Professor at the Breakfast-Table [El profesor al desayuno] (1860). También compuso el poema The Chambered Nautilus [El caracol en su concha] y la novela Elsie Venner (1861). Fue padre del juez de la Corte Suprema estadounidense Oliver Wendell Colmes, Jr.
